Seven races into the season, the Brawn GP team continues to impress as it exceeds the wildest expectations of many observers. The team formerly known as Honda has recorded six victories so far, dropping only one to the Red Bull outfit in China.

Heading into the British round of the championship, Jenson Button is the man to beat this weekend at Silverstone. Aboard the other Brawn BGP 001, although he has had a fair share of bad luck at times, Rubens Barrichello remains just as motivated as ever to finish ahead of his teammate.

Having stood on the podium at the conclusion of each Grand Prix held so far, Button particularly wishes to repeat the experience this weekend: not only to claim a possible first win in front of his home crowd, but also to savour the last Formula One victory podium presented at the famous, historic, and much-loved Silverstone circuit before the series eventually moves to Donington Park.

However, nothing is a given in racing and the Brawn team continues to work hard to ensure that the top spots in both the drivers' and manufacturers' championships remain theirs.

Jenson Button, Rubens Barrichello and Team Principal Ross Brawn share thir memories of the Silverstone venue as well as their expectations ahead of Saturday's qualifying session and Sunday's final F1 race at Silverstone.

"The British Grand Prix is always an amazing weekend and I can't wait to race at Silverstone in front of our home fans on Sunday. To be leading the Championship going into my home Grand Prix is something that I've never experienced before and it puts a smile on my face every time I think about it," said Jenson Button. "I've raced at Silverstone from some fairly tough positions in the past but the fans have always been so supportive and I'd love to give them a performance that they can really enjoy this weekend."

Getting down to the complicated business of winning races, the Briton added: "We took a good step forward with the balance of our car in Turkey but know that our closest competitors are going to be good in the high-speed corners so it will be an interesting weekend. If we come away with a good result, I'll be so happy on Sunday!"

"The layout of Silverstone makes it one of the classic racing circuits and along with Suzuka and Spa, it has to be one of the best tracks out there. Every driver who races here loves the place as it's so fast and you can really push the car to its limits. It's a great circuit for the fans as you can see just how amazing the cars are from the speed, the change of the direction and the braking. I particularly love the section of the track around Becketts which is one of the best complexes in Formula One and a great place to watch the race," Button observed.

"I have so many memories of Silverstone going right back to Mansell's win in 1987 and my first Formula One race there in 2000 when David Coulthard won and I finished fifth. It's strange to think that this might be our last race at Silverstone and I can't imagine not having a British Grand Prix so we'll be going all out to put on a fantastic show," the championship leader promised.

Rubens Barrichello is a veteran of the Silverstone circuit, with hundreds of laps of experience to his benefit.

"Silverstone is one of my all-time favourite circuits and I absolutely love racing there," the Brazilian began. "The track is fantastic as it is one of the few remaining on the calendar that are high-speed, fast-flowing and really allow you to let the car go through the quick corners. It is also a very safe track and that's important from a driver's perspective. Becketts is probably the most impressive corner with a 290kph bend which leads into a challenging complex. Overtaking can be pretty spectacular if you get it right in one of the high-speed sections although the best opportunities are probably the slower corners at Vale and Abbey."

"I have some amazing memories from Silverstone over the years and it feels really sad that this might be the last time that we race there," Barrichello contemplated. "I spent so much time testing and racing at the circuit when I was younger that it almost feels like a home track and the crowds are always supportive, even if you aren't British!"

Unlike Button, Barrichello has already tasted victory at Silverstone, a feat which dates back to his Ferrari days. As a Brawn GP racer he intends to add his name to the winner's list once more before the British Grand Prix moves elsewhere.

"My win here in 2003 was really special and it's fantastic to be returning this year with a car that has the potential to compete for the victory," he said. "There's a lot of expectation going into the weekend as our team's home Grand Prix but we will remain calm and just focus on doing the best job that we possibly can," Barrichello concluded.

Nico Rosberg added to his points tally last time out with a season-best fifth position in the Turkish Grand Prix. The Williams Toyota driver has been in the points in five of the seven races so far this season and is now seventh in the drivers' standings having moved ahead of Felipe Massa, Kimi Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso.

“I really enjoyed the Turkish GP," said Rosberg. "After struggling a little bit with tyre choice as there was very little difference between the option and the prime, we settled into the weekend, made it into Q3 again and I felt confident that we had a good car for the race."

"Making up four places in the first lap was a great way to start the race, it would have been nice if I’d caught Trulli, but fifth is still the team’s best result this season," Rosberg continued. "We have to keep scoring points at every race if we’re going to make progress in the Constructors’ so getting those four points was important for us.”

Looking ahead to the British Grand Prix, the final Grand Prix scheduled for the Silverstone circuit, Rosberg is keen to add to his points tally and help the Grove-based team in their battle with McLaren Mercedes over fifth position in the constructors' standings.

“Silverstone is a great circuit, one of the few remaining tracks that really challenge a driver," Rosberg stated. "Even though I’m German, it still feels special racing in front of the British fans when you drive for a British team. The atmosphere is amazing at Silverstone, and I know that lots of people come for the weekend who are based in the factory. As a reward for all their efforts this year, it would be amazing if we could deliver a really good result on Sunday.”

One driver very much in the need of a good result is team-mate Kazuki Nakajima. A look at the drivers’ standings shows that most teams have secured similar results for both drivers. At Williams however Nakajima is flat last in the championship while Rosberg goes it alone in scoring all 11.5 points for the team.

The silver-lining for Nakajima is that he looked to be on for his first points of the season in Turkey until a problem fitting his front left wheel in the final pt stop dropped him out of the points and down to 12th position by the chequered flag.


“Istanbul was obviously disappointing but it was one of those things that happens to most drivers at some point or other," Nakajima explained. "It’s just frustrating that I was having a great race and I was on for my first points of the season when it happened to me! We took some new parts with us to Istanbul and they seem to have helped us make some progress and close the gap to the cars in front a little, so that’s encouraging to take with us to Silverstone.”

“I really enjoy going to Silverstone," Nakajima continued. "As I’ve lived in Oxford for a few years now, the British Grand Prix is kind of a home race for me after Japan. The British fans seem to really love Formula One and make a big weekend of it, so it should be a bit more lively than Turkey! Williams has a lot of history at Silverstone, winning our first race there in 1979 and then our 100th as well, so it’s also a bit of a special weekend for the team.”

With Rosberg carrying the team in terms of its points tally, Technical Director Sam Michael for one acknowledges that Williams could - and should - be higher in the championship.

"Our performance as a team is measured by our position in the constructors’ championship," Michael explained. "We’re lying in sixth at the moment but I don’t think the FW31 is the sixth fastest car; I think we’re faster than that, as we’ve proved many times in qualifying and with the positions the drivers have run in during the race."

Michael is keen to praise both drivers however explaining that Rosberg now has the experience of 60 starts to his credit to rely on while Toyota protégé Nakajima has closed the gap on his team-mate in his second full season.

"The FW31 is a big improvement over last year’s car and now performs well in high speed corners so we should be more competitive there than last year," the Australian continued. "We’ll also be introducing some more improvements to the car, so hopefully we’ll have a good race."

Bridgestone ha elegido los compuestos duro y blando de sus neumáticos para la cita de este próximo fin de semana ene Silverstone, octava prueba del Campeonato del Mundo FIA de Fórmula Uno 2009, el Gran Premio de Gran Bretaña, que es el último que se disputará en este trazado.

Para Bridgestone ésta es como su segunda carrera en casa de la temporada, ya que la compañía tiene su base europea en Gran Bretaña, apenas a 100 kilómetros del circuito, en Langley, cerca del aeropuerto de Heathrow. Eso implica que será un fin de semana intenso para el equipo, con invitados y familiares entre los espectadores para poder ver en directo cómo los ingenieros y técnicos de Bridgestone trabajan duro para suministrar los mejores neumáticos posibles a los equipos de F1.

Los pilotos se enfrentarán en Silverstone al desafío de un circuito de alta velocidad, con un sector también muy lento antes de la recta de meta. Las altas velocidades que se alcanzan, así como la naturaleza abrasiva de la pista harán que los neumáticos tengan que emplearse a fondo este próximo fin de semana.

¿Cuales son las exigencias del circuito de Silverstone?
“El sector más lento del trazado, justo antes de la recta de meta, es un punto propicio para que aparezca el graining, así que esperamos ver y mucho allí, sobre todo al iniciarse el fin de semana. La mayor parte de la vuelta en Silverstone es muy rápida, así que los coches requieren una buena estabilidad en curva rápida y los neumáticos necesitan una buena resistencia al calor y al desgaste. El último sector es el más lento, así que la puesta a punto tendrá que funcionar bien allí y también en las zonas más rápidas.”

¿Hay alguna consideración particular a tener en cuenta con la climatología?
“La carrera del año pasado fue en mojado y normalmente allí la meteorología es muy variable, así que puede ser interesante. Silverstone tiene un asfalto abrasivo y se seca muy rápido en cuanto deja de llover. Aún no hemos utilizado nuestro nuevo neumático intermedio en carrera. Es un compuesto blando, pero confiamos en que funcionará bien, incluso en un circuito tan abrasivo como el de Silverstone.”

Muchos cambios en el F60 para Silverstone

Ferrari afronta el GP de Gran Bretaña de este próximo fin de semana tras haber realizado un test en recta el pasado lunes en Fiorano con Felipe Massa al volante del bólido rojo. El piloto brasileño probó varios componentes aerodinámicos nuevos, incluido un nuevo alerón delantero y otros elementos en la parte delantera del F60.

En ese test aerodinámico, el F60 también probó una nueva geometría en su suspensión delantera, buscando así poder cambiar el reparto de pesos del coche incidiendo en la parte delantera. El coche tuvo que pasar en consecuencia un nuevo test de impacto, que se superó sin problemas.

La nueva geometría en la suspensión delantera persigue encontrar un mayor agarre en la parte delantera del F60, algo que debería servir para superar uno de los talones de Aquiles del coche este año, el conseguir la temperatura idónea en los neumáticos, algo básico en la sesión de calificación. Además, el equipo italiano también presentará en Silverstone un KERS renovado y más ligero.

"El lunes viví una experiencia inusual este año, ya que piloté un Fórmula Uno fuera de un fin de semana de competición," explicaba Massa. "Con la prohibición de los test privados esta temporada, el espacio entre carreras se destina este año a hablar mucho con los ingenieros en Maranello, pero sin actividad en pista. Sin embargo, en esta ocasión, como nuestro piloto de pruebas Marc Gené había competido y ganado las 24 Horas de Le Mans el día anterior, me encargué yo de ponerme al volante del coche en el test aerodinámico de Fiorano."

"Aunque yo diría más bien ponerme al volante más que pilotar, ya que para ser sincero, no es la tarea más interesante del mundo para un piloto, ya que te sientes como un robot, simplemente completando las rectas en un sentido y en otro," proseguía el brasileño. "Pero es algo muy importante para el equipo y para el desarrollo del coche, así que estoy contento de haberlo podido hacer. Al sólo poder rodar en recta tampoco puedes darle excesiva información a los ingenieros, pero si puedes cambiar los ajustes del alerón delantero y revisar la telemetría, comparando así los datos del túnel de viento para comprobar si las cosas van bien. "

Mediada ya la temporada, Felipe Massa es octavo en el Campeonato del Mundo con un total de 11 puntos, igualado con el doble Campeón del Mundo Fernando Alonso. Este próximo fin de semana en Silverstone, Massa finalmente dispondrá de un chasis más ligero que ya se introdujo por primera vez en Mónaco para su compañero Kimi Raikkonen.

"Sobre el papel, el GP de Gran Bretaña se disputa en un circuito con ciertas similitudes al de Estambul, donde no fuimos excesivamente competitivos," decía Massa. "Silverstone también cuenta con curvas rápidas, sectores rápidos y una última parte de la vuelta muy lento. Además, contaremos con los mismos dos tipos de neumáticos que en Turquía, aunque espero que no suframos como lo hicimos hace quince días en Estambul. Para empezar, este próximo fin de semana estrenaremos nuevos componentes en el coche, incluido un nuevo alerón delantero y un chasis más ligero, lo que debería hacernos más competitivos."

"Pero pase lo que pase sobre la pista en Silverstone, la actual situación política de la F1 seguirá acaparando titulares de nuevo," admitía Massa en referencia a que mañana viernes se cumplirá la fecha límite dada por la FIA a los equipos ‘rebeldes’ para su inscripción. "Cuando estoy al volante nunca pienso en nada, simplemente me concentro en mi trabajo y en ir lo más rápido posible, pero fuera del coche sí pienso en todo este conflicto porque afecta a mi futuro y al de la Fórmula Uno."

Kimi Raikkonen no pudo puntuar en Turquía tras hacer una pobre salida y acusar una falta de agarre general en su Ferrari. Con nueve puntos en su casillero, el piloto finlandés es décimo en el Campeonato, aunque el ex Campeón del Mundo confía en poder reducir distancias con los líderes a partir de este fin de semana.

"Por primera vez estamos compitiendo en Silverstone sin haber hecho un test previo," comentaba el finlandés. "El equipo ha preparado algunas nuevas soluciones, que serán probadas el viernes en Silverstone. Como ya hemos dicho varias veces antes, hemos de ser pacientes: estamos mejorando gracias al duro trabajo de desarrollo, pero todavía no podemos disputarle las victorias a los Brawn. Estoy muy confiado y convencido de que tras otras dos carreras habremos recortado diferencias con los líderes. Sé que es lo que quieren nuestros seguidores y lo daremos todo para conseguirlo."

En el que será el último GP de Gran Bretaña en Silverstone, Raikkonen espera poder subir al podio. "En este circuito comencé prácticamente mi carrera internacional en categorías inferiores y siempre me ha encantado competir aquí," decía. "Y por eso es un poco triste que ésta vaya a ser la última edición de la carrera en Silverstone, pero he de admitir que también me gusta mucho Donington. Ya he ganado allí también..."

Hill hasn't given up on Silverstone's F1 future

Damon Hill is confident that this weekend's British Grand Prix will not be Silverstone's final round of the F1 World Championship.

Silverstone is bidding to Formula One this weekend having lost the rights to host the British GP to Donington Park.

And although Donington reportedly has a 17-year contract, there have been a few stumbling blocks, which Hill is hoping could benefit Silverstone.

"Things change rapidly, and I don't think we're discounting the possibility that it could be back at some point," the British Racing Drivers' Club president told Autosport.

"We're carrying on with development and the future of Silverstone. The BRDC still owns Silverstone, and Silverstone has a very strong link with grand prix racing but it's not the only thing that happens here. It's a big venue with a lot of activity and we are pressing ahead to carry on developing it.

"There is doubt over whether or not Donington are going to overcome their difficulties. We need a fallback position."

F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone, though, has already made it clear that Silverstone won't be a "fallback", saying that should Donington fail to deliver, Britain won't have a grand prix.

But Hill, a past winner of the British GP, insists that the race is vital to the history of Formula One.

"The British Grand Prix is a crucial part of the mix of F1, the history of F1," said Hill. "No doubt you can argue that no-one is indispensable, but the British Grand Prix is part of that, and likewise Silverstone.

"It's also part of something which is of immeasurable value to the Championship, the history of the sport. Nostalgia is looking back wistfully, but it is also the key ingredient which makes something more valuable in the future because it has a history. Continuity of the sport is its value.

"I would never be against trying to export F1 or motorsport around the world. I think it's a terrific sport provided the economy can support it and people are able to enjoy it safely.

"It galvanises people and it's great that it happens in other places. But it's not good to have an event where there isn't a packed crowd of people who are knowledgeable about sport - that's why football is so strong in this country."

El domingo, lloverá sobre Silverstone

Para el Gran Premio de Inglaterra, que se disputará en el ex aeródromo situado en la ciudad de Silverstone, hay probabilidades de lluvias para el viernes y domingo. Esta información ha sido suministrada por el servicio meteorológico.

Para el viernes, día dedicado a los entrenamientos libres, está pronosticado un 30% de probabilidad de chubascos dispersos. La temperatura ambiental mínima rondará los 9ºC y la máxima los 17ºC. Los vientos soplarán de oeste-noroeste a 27 km/h y la humedad relativa del ambiente rondará el 62%.

Para el sábado, clasificación para el Gran Premio, está pronosticado un día nublado, con un 10% de probabilidad de lluvias. La temperatura oscilará entre los 9ºC y los 16ºC. Los vientos soplarán del noroeste a 24 km/h y la humedad relativa del ambiente estará presente en un 65%.

Para el domingo, día del GP de Inglaterra, se pronostica un 60% de probabilidad de lluvias débiles. La temperatura ambiental mínima rondará los 11ºC y la máxima los 17ºC. Los vientos soplarán del norte-noroeste a 13 km/h y la humedad relativa del ambiente rondará el 69%.

Sebastian Vettel, Red Bull, Silverstone 2009Red Bull will introduce a raft of major updates to its RB5 at this weekend's British Grand Prix at Silverstone as the team seeks to close the gap to runaway world championship leaders Jenson Button and his Brawn team.

The changes, which will include a new nose, engine cover and rear diffuser as well as modifications to the car's wheel-base - which has been back through the chassis - are believed to have given the car a significantly look.

The team's drivers have played down the changes, adding that they would prefer to comment once they have tried the modifications on track.

"We've got a couple of new things on the car, which you will be able to see from the outside, we hope they work – that's why they put it on the car," said Sebastian Vettel. "But we will have to prove it on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. So let's see.

"Our target is to win, it has been for the last couple of races and it is here so we have to beat Brawn. Not just match them, then it is quite tight, but I think this circuit suits our car.

"A lot of fast corners and medium speed corners, so let's hope the few bits on the car make a difference, and we will finally make the breakthrough."

Vettel's team-mate Mark Webber added: "We hope it's worth a few tenths... one or two tenths maximum."

In a press conference on Thursday, pre-race favourite Button recognised that Red Bull could prove a big threat to his hopes of a home win this weekend: "I have heard that Red Bull have got a big upgrade, I don't know how big but I hope it is not too big. So we will see."

En todo caso andan duro esos Red Bull como se esperaba. Están estrenando una trompa nueva más ancha, y además una segunda versión de su difusor de doble fondo.

Red Bull's 2009 car is so heavily modified for the British Grand Prix that it will look visibly different when it hits the Silverstone circuit this morning.

The new parts are yet to arrive from the Austrian team's nearby Milton-Keynes base, but Sebastian Vettel revealed that the new nose resembles a "duck's beak".

Germany's Auto Motor und Sport said the modified front of the RB5 is significantly wider, while Adrian Newey has also worked on an improved iteration of the double diffuser.

"From the simulation numbers in the wind tunnel it looks not bad," Vettel said of the sweeping bodywork upgrade, said to also include new front and rear wings.

Mark Webber said: "Silverstone should be the ideal track for our car."
