EKN Awards 2010: Driver of the Year - Daniel Formal

The program honors five winners in five categories - Driver of the Year, Team of the Year, Rising Star, Road Racer of the Year, and Young Driver of the Year - with one announced each day. There is no arguing that the former winner list of the Driver of the Year category is a who’s who of karting from the past dozen years. Most, if not all, could be considered to be some of the best talent the sport has ever seen. Most hold a strong CV from their karting years, highlighted by multiple titles and victories, some still adding to their resumes over the past few seasons. The state of the sport has changed in recent years, with an emphasis turning more to the Touch and Go categories in the country. The Rotax program is certainly on the rise and is becoming one of the primary places to see the best of the best compete. Among those talented drivers is Daniel Formal – the eKartingNews.com Driver of the Year for 2010.

Competing throughout the 2010 season at the age of 14 (Daniel turned 15 in December 2010); Formal’s accomplishments have only increased his potential. His size, however, puts him at a disadvantage as he looks like he could be playing as a power forward in basketball or a defensive lineman for a high school team. Through plenty of laps and a deep understanding of the skills he needs to go fast, Daniel has done extremely well thus far in his young career.

The 2010 season began at the Florida Winter Tour program. In the stacked international field, which included multi-time champions from different countries, Formal came within 32 points of claiming the championship - losing out to former Rotax World Champion Pier-Luc Ouellette. Formal also added a vice-champion prize in the Pro Rotax division during the series Formula Kart weekends.

Formal’s main goal of the 2010 season was to earn a spot on the Team USA squad, so that he could attend the Rotax Grand Finals in Italy. With the U.S. Rotax Max Challenge Grand Nationals representing his ticket into the show, Formal put all his chips on that event. Qualifying fifth in Rotax Senior, Formal ran in the runner-up position in all three heat races to sit third on the Prefinal grid. Taking advantage of an opening lap skirmish, Formal assumed the point and earned the pole position for the main event. Formal held the lead through the opening laps before the battle raged on. Falling at one point to fifth, Formal was able to advance back up to the third spot and earn his ticket to the Grand Finals.

Adding to his season results, Formal made four starts in the Rotax Pan American Challenge series. After placing in the top-five at the New Castle round prior to the Grand Nationals, Formal picked up two victories at the Homestead events.

Ending his season overseas at the Grand Finals around the La Conca karting circuit, Formal made the USA proud - in his first appearance at the event - by his performance against some of the best Rotaxians in the world. After qualifying second overall, Formal held the position through the heat races, including win in the second round. Formal fell to fifth in the Prefinal and avoided troubles in the main event to place in the same position - the second best finish by an American at the event (4th by Joey Wimsett in 2009).

Thanks to his consistent and impressive results on the season, Formal competed the 2010 season as the top driver in the EKN TaG Driver Rankings. At 15 years of age, the sky is the limit for what Formal can do behind the wheel of a kart and quite possibly up the ranks of the motorsports ladder.

Este fin de semana corrrio en el FWT en KZ2 (Shifter ICC) y gano los 2 dias, aqui estamos super felices ya que es una clase que es nueva para nosotros, vamos a seguir para la proxima en Oclaa, y Vamos a prepararnos para los Super Nationals de las Vegas.
