End of the line for HRT?
01/12/2012
Mat Coch writes:
Already in doubt, it seems the fate of HRT has finally been sealed. While official comment has not been made Toni Cuquerella, the team's Technical Director, has given one of the strongest suggestions so far that its future is bleak.
"Four years ago I suggested to a friend to start an F1 team," Cuquerella has tweeted. "Today, after three years, the final page of that story is being written for HRT."
Over the Brazilian Grand Prix weekend it was reported in some corners that drivers Narain Karthikeyan and Pedro de la Rosa were given the choice of racing or not. The team allegedly had concerns over the life of some critical components, most notably the brakes, however both drivers opted to take part in the race regardless.
Once mechanics returned to Spain it was further alleged an incident at the team's Madrid factory resulted in Police being called to the scene. The exact circumstances are unclear however some have suggested mechanics were not permitted to retrieve personal items from the factory without signing a contract termination, to which they allegedly objected.
Speaking at the Brazilian Grand Prix Pedro de la Rosa revealed his concerns over the team's future. "None of us know what will happen, but we have to assume that the team will continue and that we still have to do the best possible job and forget about all this.
"It's easy to say but difficult to do," he admitted. "All I know is that we are here and everyone that is here has not received anything. We are here and we are working until the end. What happens afterwards is unknown, but unknown to everyone. It's not that I know more, or that someone knows about it. I don't think anyone knows at the moment."
The team was unavailable for comment when contacted by Pitpass, though it was confirmed to us last week that "Luis (Perez-Sala) is not giving interviews until the situation (becomes) clear. We don't want to speculate, so we'll wait until the situation (is resolved)."
Calls to the team's Madrid office on Saturday would not connect… the line dead.

Formula One racing’s governing body, the FIA, has published the entry list for the 2013 FIA Formula One World Championship. It features 11 teams, with HRT missing from the line-up.
HRT owners Thesan Capital made it known publically last month that they were looking for a buyer for the Spanish team, who joined the grid in 2010 along with Caterham and Marussia, and whose future now looks uncertain.
The rest of the entry list is as expected. Several drivers who have been confirmed by their respective 2013 teams are absent, thought to be because their car numbers are yet to be finalised.
Those drivers are Nico Hulkenberg and Esteban Gutierrez at Sauber, Jean-Eric Vergne and Daniel Ricciardo at Toro Rosso, Charles Pic at Caterham and Timo Glock at Marussia.
The FIA entry list in full:
1 Sebastian Vettel, Red Bull
2 Mark Webber, Red Bull
3 Fernando Alonso, Ferrari
4 Felipe Massa, Ferrari
5 Jenson Button, McLaren

Bruno Senna remains hopeful he will be on the Formula 1 grid next season despite having lost his seat at Williams.
The Brazilian has been replaced by Finnish driver Valtteri Bottas, who will partner Pastor Maldonado from the 2013 season.
Senna has been in talks with Caterham and Force India and is believed to be still in the running for a seat with both teams.
AUTOSPORT understands that Senna tested a DTM car for Mercedes at Estoril last week, but he says he is still working hard to secure a slot for what would be his second full season in F1.
"You're never relaxed until you have a nice signed contract, but we're working very hard," Senna told AUTOSPORT. "Chris [Goodwin, manager] is a busy little bee. He's been doing his job very well.
"Hopefully before the end of the year we'll have a nice clear path to follow."
Senna insisted that having to make way for Bottas in 15 Friday practice sessions during the season made his year more difficult.
The Brazilian reckons he still did a good job considering his relative lack of experience.
"It's a tough world championship," he added. "This has probably been the toughest Formula 1 world championship in many years. I think that coming into it as my first real year in Formula 1 was already a challenge.
"And then missing practice sessions all over the season, probably missing about 30 per cent of all the practice sessions of the year, is a lot of practice missed.
"That probably puts you in a position where you shouldn't be at the start, only by a couple of tenths sometimes.
"It's made my year much more difficult. But still I've learned a lot. It's been a very big learning curve for me, and a very good one."

Ecclestone confirms Turkey GP revival effort
Bernie Ecclestone has confirmed he is pushing to revive the Turkish grand prix.
We reported at the weekend that Istanbul Park, the Hermann Tilke-penned circuit that hosted formula one between 2005 and 2011, has been taken over by local businessman Vural Ak.
F1 chief executive Ecclestone told Italy's La Gazzetta dello Sport: "I am going to Istanbul to see if we can get the Turkish grand prix back before participating at the World Council."
The 82-year-old Briton also used the interview with the authoritative sports newspaper to reject claims by Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo he is now too old to be in charge of F1.
"I have a thousand ideas," said Ecclestone.

PM to decide Turkey's F1 return on Friday
Turkey is set to return to the formula one calendar, the government-linked Turkish news agency Anadolu Ajansi reported on Thursday.
The report said "everything except the price" has been agreed between Turkish officials and F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone.
The news follows the FIA's announcement on Wednesday that a twentieth race date for an unidentified additional European event has been set aside for mid 2013.
"We have agreed in principle the matter of the contract with me as the operator," businessman Vural Ak, who has taken over the management of 2005-2011 Turkish grand prix venue Istanbul Park, is quoted as saying.
Ak said the matter should be resolved on Friday, when Istanbul hosts the official FIA prize-giving gala.
"The prime minister is invited," he revealed. "He will discuss it there, because the state has a contribution to make.
"We have agreed in principle, but the government will make the final decision."

FIA tightens front wing tests
Thursday 6th December 2012
Formula One cars will be subject to stricter front wing deflection tests during the 2013 season, the FIA has confirmed.
The tweak and amendments to some technical and sporting regulations for next year came on the back of the final World Motor Sport Council meeting in Istanbul on Wednesday.
The change to the deflection tests is the result of a number of controversies, which most notably involved Constructors' Champions Red Bull, in that area this season.
The use of DRS will also be restricted as drivers will in future only be allowed to use it in the same designated zones where it will be available in the race.
Minor changes have also been made to the front roll structure design while there is an increase in minimum weight to compensate for an increase in tyre weight for 2013.
Meanwhile, the current 'force majeure' allowance, that can be used when a car stops on track in qualifying, was deleted with the FIA saying it would "determine how much fuel the car would have used to get back to the pits and add it to the one litre sample minimum".
World Champion Sebastian Vettel was penalised and sent to the back of the grid at this year's Abu Dhabi GP after it was found his car didn't have enough fuel in the tank following qualifying.
On the sporting regulations side, the team personnel curfew will be extended from six to eight hours on Thursday night, while only two exceptions will be allowed during the season instead of the current four.

Grosjean, a examen

Grosjean finished on the podium in Bahrain, Canada and Hungary and was eighth in the Drivers’ Championship. He had more than his fair share of incidents, but showed some more maturity at the end of the year.
“Romain is a great talent and we are pleased that he is continuing with us for a second season,” said team boss Eric Boullier. “With the continuity of two exceptional drivers like Romain and Kimi we are well placed to build on our strong 2012 with even better results in the year ahead. Both drivers worked very well together in their first year as team-mates, and I think there is the potential of even better things from the season ahead.”
Grosjean is, naturally, delighted at the news
“It’s fantastic for me to be continuing with Lotus F1 Team for 2013,” he said. “It’s superb to have the support of everyone at Enstone. I’m really looking forward to rewarding their faith when we take to the track in Australia. I learnt a lot in my first full season in Formula 1 and my aim is to put these lessons into practice with stronger and more consistent performance on track next year. There are a lot of exciting developments occurring behind the scenes at Enstone and I am very excited with the prospect of the E21.”
