Lag and connection problems can be a major issue when emerging in online gameplay. It can ruin gaming experiences, and frankly, make the whole experience quite frustrating!
The root cause of the problems come from the user, and how their NAT is set. Test your broadband XBL Internet connection now on your Xbox360 via the dashboard
Test Connection
Go to My Xbox on the dashboard, and go to the far right for System Settings. Locate Network Settings, then Test your connection. Does it give you an error message or did it go through with no prompts? Your NAT is open if it doesn't give you a message. If it isn't open, it will tell you via an error message.
Anything other than Open though, and your asking for trouble! Razz
Heres a quick way to make your NAT open and avoid connection problems. If your running through a router, the best, quickest and easiest way to resolve your NAT connection is to utilise what is known as a 'DMZ connection'. This connection is basically put outside the usual security in place from Firewalls etc that your computer is using.
The Xbox is ideal to this because:-
- you don't have to forward any 'ports' which could put your computer at a risk to security
- the Xbox is on a secure network with that of Microsoft, and basically, there are no risks currently known!
To achieve your DMZ connection, you have to access the routers settings through the computer. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, and Run
2. In the box, type cmd - this will bring up the windows program, in a black box. In this box, type in ipconfig /all
3. Look for the Default Gateway, and it will have a number in the format of xxx.xxx.x.x - this is your routers IP - simply copy this number into the address bar of a web page
4. This now loads your router settings. Once here, look for DMZ which may be under advanced settings
5. Once it is found, apply the same number that you entered in the address bar. However, change the last number to a different number (go for higher numbers, such as 5 or 6)
6. Be sure to enable DMZ, and also apply/save all setting changes.
7. Now, on your xbox dashboard, change the connection from automatic to manual, and simply copy across all the details (DNS etc), but change the IP address's last number to match that of what you entered into the DMZ on the computer.
8. Test your connection, and your NAT should be OPEN!
